I am planning to move to California, meaning it's probably time to buy the 7 I've been thinking about for 20 years. I called AAA for an insurance quote on a Caterham 7 Roadsport 175..."it's a WHAT?"
I've read that some of you use AAA, who do I call to get past the WHAT.

Farmer's gave me a 3rd party insurance but it was twice as much as Hagerty... though I could drive it anywhere, anytime. I just went with Hagerty as it's not a daily driver.

Robert, unless you are going to use the Seven as a daily driver, you are might better off with one of the collector car insurance companies. You tell them how much it is worth and that is what they insure it for (declared value). I use American Collectors and get a choice of 2500, 5000, or 7500 miles a year. 5000 miles/year and $28,000 declared value cost me about $450 a year. They don't cover track days though.

Stan,
What are the restrictions with American Collectors? I looked into Hagerty a few years ago, but I didn't like the fact that I couldn't drive the Westfield to work, or park it in some public places.
Thanks,
John

Thanks everybody. I gather you identify the car as a collector by the 1960's designation used for registration.

Not necessarily. Hagerty insures "high-value rare replicas" as proven by picture and description. Usually they don't insure Cobra replicas though being dime a dozen. The funny thing with Hagerty is they asked for mileage when I applied 6 years ago and mentioned a 5000 mile limit but I find it nowhere in the policy and they never asked for an updated odometer reading.
I have everything else insured by AAA but they did not want to insure the Seven beyond liability. The AAA contracted collectors car insurance did not want to do it at all.

John, American Collectors has similar restrictions unfortunately.
Also, I made sure they knew my car is a replica, and it is listed as "1965 Lotus 7 Replica" in the written policy.
