I receieved email from Martha Hawkins today and thought I'd pass along this sad news:

"Joe died yesterday around noon. His funeral is Monday, February 12, at St. Leo's Church, 176 Ridgeway (at Piedmont Avenue) in Oakland, at 10:00 AM.

I know he would want you to know because he was so fond of all of you."

Joe was a great guy, inventive, and a real friend. Rest in peace, Joe!

Joe,

May your heavenly seven be light and fast, and never need fuel or fettling (unless you just want to fettle!).

You were a true enthusiast in the pits and on the track. We will miss you.

Joe was a genuine enthusiast. When he and Martha drove to Buttonwillow last April to see all of us for the day I had the impression that it was a heroic efffort for him to make that trip.

We need more guys like him in 7s!!!

That is too sad. Joe was a real enthusiast and very nice guy to talk with.
