Smog inspection and catch tank

:?: Does anyone know if a catch tank for the crankcase/valve cover vent is necessary for the smog inspection??

...or is a breather acceptable?

The guy at the smog station I spoke w/ about it suggested roughly what you've done here. He reckoned that the "air" coming in was more dangerous than anything coming out (!).

I don't think you'll have any trouble w/ the setup as shown. But then, my experience is that the process is somewhat loose - it seems to be interpereted differently everywhere. As I mentioned in another thread they never even put my car on the rollers...

What filter did you use Tom? Mine breather is just sitting there open for now. I need to get it done up.

Hi Chris,

I just picked one up at the local Kragen store. It was in the "dress up" section. :)

I'll probably add a catch tank, like slomoves at sometime in the future, but I'd be happy to keep this setup for the time being.

On your web site, on pic. #161 there is a dark circular canister mounted at the right front of the engine bay. It's plumbed w/ rubber hose.

What is that?

Hi Chris,

That is the charcoal canister. It is part of the "emissions" system. The line going into it is the vent line from the fuel tank. Some folks in the UK have done away with it entirely but you need to rig up some kind of vent:

I had mine hooked up for a while until it started to shake loose.

I then disconnected the vent pipe from the tank and pointed it downard, removed the canister and called it a day. Haven't been happier since.
